What it is
Fuel injectors are nozzles that spray fuel into the engine cylinders at exactly the right time and volume. Diesel engines use a high-pressure injector pump to deliver fuel to each injector.
What it does
Fuel injectors spray fuel as a fine mist into the cylinders, mixing with air to create the correct mixture combustion. The injector pump controls how much fuel is delivered and when, affecting engine speed and power. Good injection ensures complete combustion with minimal smoke, while poor injection wastes fuel, increases emissions and may cause damage to internal engine components.
Why it matters
Dirty or worn injectors cause rough running, hard starting, excessive smoke and poor fuel economy. Failed injectors can lead to misfiring or engine damage if unburned fuel floods cylinders. Injector pump failure often requires costly rebuilding or replacement. Water or contaminated fuel can quickly damage injectors, requiring replacement of the entire set.
General Maintenance
Keep fuel clean by changing filters regularly and using quality additives. Have injectors professionally tested or cleaned periodically or if performance drops. Never let filters get clogged, as debris can damage injectors. If you get bad fuel, replace filters and bad fuel immediately, and consider injector inspection. Injector pumps usually last a long time but should be checked if the engine smokes, loses power or makes unusual noises.
