What it is
The air filter is a canister mounted on the engine that filters incoming air to remove debris before it enters the intake. Both diesel and gasoline engines require clean air for efficient operation. Older engines may have an oil-coated filter element.
What it does
The filter element traps dust and debris before they enter the engine’s air intake, protecting internal components like valves and rocker arms from abrasive wear. Clean air is essential for efficient combustion. Diesel engines, for example, can require up to 10,000 gallons of air for every gallon of fuel burned.
Why it matters
A clogged air filter can restrict airflow, causing overheating, black smoke, power loss and poor fuel economy. Running an engine without a filter can allow salt-laden marine air to corrode the engine's internal components.
General Maintenance
There’s no universal replacement schedule for air filters. It can vary depending on the filter type, engine model and operating conditions. Your best reference is always the manufacturer’s recommended maintenance interval. Never run an engine without a filter, and make sure the housing seals properly so unfiltered air can’t bypass the element. Inspecting the air filter should be part of your pre-start checklist.
Common Issues
- Clogged filter restricting airflow, causing black smoke and power loss
- Missing or improperly seated filter allowing unfiltered air into engine
- Salt-saturated filter from operating in heavy spray conditions
- Filter housing gasket deteriorated, allowing air to bypass filter
- Wrong or old filter installed, either too restrictive or providing inadequate filtration
