What is Fuel Filters?
Fuel filters remove contaminants and water from fuel before it reaches the engine. Most marine engines have both a primary filter near the tank and a secondary filter closer to the engine. The primary filter typically has a clear bowl at the bottom where water accumulates and can be drained through a valve.

What it is
Fuel filters remove contaminants and water from fuel before it reaches the engine. Most marine engines have both a primary filter near the tank and a secondary filter closer to the engine. The primary filter typically has a clear bowl at the bottom where water accumulates and can be drained through a valve.
What it does
Filters trap dirt, rust, biological growth and other particles that could clog fuel injectors or damage fuel pumps. The water separator in primary filters removes water that condenses in the fuel tank or comes from contaminated fuel at the pump. Clean filters ensure consistent fuel flow and protect expensive injection system components from damage.
Why it matters
Clogged fuel filters are a common cause of engine failure at sea and can leave you stranded in dangerous conditions. Water or debris reaching the injectors can cause serious damage, requiring full fuel system cleaning or injector replacement. Regular filter changes are effective and inexpensive preventive maintenance.
General Maintenance
Change both primary and secondary fuel filters annually or every 100-200 hours, whichever comes first. Drain water from the primary filter bowl monthly or whenever you see water accumulation, as even a few teaspoons of water can stop the engine. Keep spare filters on board. If you receive contaminated fuel, change the filters immediately and repeat as needed until the fuel runs clean.
