What it is
An fixed fire suppression system is a specialized fire extinguishing system installed in the engine room that activates without human intervention when detecting fire. They are typically found on vessels 65 feet and over.
What it does
This system provides immediate, automatic fire suppression in the highest-risk area of most boats. When fire is detected, systems can shut down the engine, cut fuel, stop ventilation fans and flood the engine room with fire suppressant. This happens faster than crew could manually respond, critical because engine room fires can become catastrophic in minutes. The system works even if the crew is asleep, incapacitated or unaware of the fire. By acting immediately, it can suppress fires before they breach engine room boundaries or compromise escape routes.
Why it matters
Engine room fires are among the most dangerous marine emergencies. They involve fuel, oil, hot surfaces, and electrical systems: perfect fire conditions. The confined, typically unmanned engine room can allow fires to develop undetected. By the time the crew notices, the fire may be too developed for portable extinguishers. Engine rooms are difficult to fight fires in manually due to heat, smoke, and limited access. Automatic systems address all these issues. They detect fire immediately, act faster than humans can, deploy sufficient agents to actually suppress the fire and protect the boat's most critical mechanical systems.
General Maintenance
Professional inspection annually by certified technicians is strongly recommended and required by insurance in some cases. Keep system documentation aboard for repair or recharge.
