What it is
An autopilot is an electronic system that automatically steers the boat to maintain a preset compass heading or GPS course. GPS integration allows course-to-waypoint steering.
What it does
The autopilot continuously monitors the boat's heading via compass sensor and compares it to the desired course. When the boat strays off course (from wind, waves, or current), the system sends commands to the drive unit to apply rudder correction, bringing the boat back on course. It makes constant small adjustments, resulting in straighter tracks that can contribute to better fuel efficiency. Advanced systems learn the boat's handling characteristics over time and adjust for sea conditions. GPS-integrated autopilots can steer complex routes with multiple waypoints and even compensate for current set and drift.
Why it matters
Autopilot reduces crew fatigue on long passages and allows single-handed sailing/motoring safely. It steers more accurately than humans, which can reduce fuel consumption. A failed autopilot on passage can be exhausting or dangerous, especially singlehanded or in rough conditions. Regular maintenance and a well designed system prevents failures offshore and extends the system's expensive components. Proper maintenance also ensures the autopilot won't make dangerous steering errors from electrical issues or sensor problems.
General Maintenance
Operate the autopilot under controlled conditions and verify that it holds course accurately across different sea states. If you detect drift, overshoot, or hesitation, perform or schedule a calibration check. Consider performing a system recalibration after any significant electrical or steering system changes. Autopilot maintenance requirements vary by system, so consult the manufacturer to develop a maintenance schedule specific to your product. Typical service may include drive unit maintenance (lubrication, seal replacement) and hydraulic pump servicing.
