An inverter converts 12V or 24V DC battery power into 120V AC power for running household appliances, electronics and power tools without shore power or a generator. Many vessels are equipped with an “inverter-charger” where the inverter supplying power for onboard AC loads and the charger supplying DC power to the batteries from shore power or generator are the same device.
What it does
Inverters convert DC battery power into AC electricity, allowing you to run electronics without using the engine or generator. Large inverters can operate microwaves, coffee makers, computers, TVs, and other appliances for limited periods, with runtime determined by battery capacity and inverter size.
Why it matters
Inverter failure cuts off AC power when away from shore power, forcing reliance on a generator for electronics and appliances. An undersized inverter can overload and shut down, while a very large inverter can overdraw batteries, causing chronic undercharge and damage. Undersized or poorly installed wiring increases voltage drop, wastes power, and poses fire risk. Blocked ventilation or failed cooling fans can overheat the inverter, leading to shutdown or permanent damage at critical times. High AC loads can also rapidly deplete batteries, leaving insufficient power for engine starting or essential systems.
General Maintenance
Verify inverter operation monthly by measuring AC output voltage and ensuring cooling fans activate under load. Inspect DC and AC connections quarterly for tightness, corrosion and signs of overheating. Monitor battery voltage while the inverter is under heavy load to detect excessive voltage drop, which can indicate poor connections or undersized cables. Annually, clean dust, salt and debris from cooling vents using compressed air. Confirm that DC circuit breakers and fuses are correctly sized for the inverter and that grounding connections are secure. AC power can be extremely dangerous. Consult a professional before attempting to change wiring or inverter settings.
